Suburb: Ponsonby, Auckland
Architect: Cameron Shields
Interior Design: Bespoke
Build type: Character-zone rebuild and extension
Renovation of this centrally located Ponsonby property transformed it from the “ugly duckling” of the street into a spacious, contemporary family home, while respecting its special character setting.
Designed by Kraftworx Architecture, the project involved partial demolition followed by extensive rebuilding over the existing footprint. Additional floor area was created by extending over former roof spaces, delivering a generous four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom layout suited to modern family living.
Because the home sits within a Special Character Zone, resource consent was required, and the design carefully developed to complement the surrounding streetscape. Despite the compact site, the finished home features well-proportioned outdoor living areas that flow directly into bright interior spaces filled with natural light.
“Lewis Build have been phenomenal, professional, proactive, sensible and reliable… They delivered a BEAUTIFUL home while handling council curve balls with grace… Couldn’t recommend Ben & the team enough.”
— Natalie, Ponsonby
Outcome: A sensitive yet dramatic transformation that demonstrates how character homes can be modernised without losing their place in Auckland’s historic neighbourhoods.
