We recently took part in the Student Pathways Programme at Saint Kentigern College, hosting one of their Year 13 students, Ryan Stephens.
Ryan worked under the supervision of two of our senior qualified builders, Michael Brookes and Sam Gurkirat, at our Karaka site. The project is a high-end pool house, with indoor and outdoor fireplaces in the living area, a study, a bathroom, and an outdoor shower. It features automated louvres over the large composite deck and recessed spa pool. Ryan worked on installing insulation, fitting nogs, installing the deck frame, and assisting the builders. Other trades are onsite, including tilers installing a large travertine fireplace, so Ryan was able to see how each trade works together.
The Student Pathways Programme (also known as Gateway) provides ‘structured workplace learning’ for Saint Kentigern College students who have an idea of a possible future job or career they wish to explore. The programme gives students the opportunity to learn in the workplace while still at school and gives them the chance to show their potential as an employee.
Being interested in a career in construction, Ryan took part in our business for one day of work experience per week for ten weeks, and now wants to continue building once he completes school. Director Ben Lewis had only good things to say about the experience, explaining “Ryan was a pleasure to have on our building sites. He fit in well with the team, was eager to learn, and showed real promise as a rookie builder. If Ryan chooses to continue on this career path, he would be a great asset to any building company”.
Ryan had his work assessed by BCITO and the work experience was wrapped up with some drinks and nibbles with the Lewis Build crew. We had a great experience with programme and hope to take on another student in the future.
